The threat that we won’t have new shows and movies coming out because of the strikes would hit a little harder if 99.9% of everything coming out wasn’t God awful derivative schlock that you watch once and immediately forget.

“Due to the strike we’ve had to turn the diarrhea machine off”

unforth:

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it’d succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I’ve seen, but I feel like a lot of people don’t really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren’t necessarily the direct action of creation, they’re doing a lot of fandom labor, and it’s often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

John Russell at LGBTQ Nation:

On the most recent episode of her MSNBC show, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki devoted a segment to exposing the right-wing extremist agenda of the anti-LGBTQ+ organization Moms for Liberty.

Anyone who has been paying attention to the frequent chaos and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric at school board meetings nationwide and efforts to ban books by and about LGBTQ+ people and people of color, you’re already well aware of what Moms for Liberty stands for.

But as Psaki noted on the July 16 episode of Inside with Jen Psaki, the organization claims to be non-partisan. That, along with the group’s misleading and innocuous-sounding name, has left many people confused about Moms for Liberty’s agenda — even after they themselves get involved with the group.

“Moms: great, sounds good. Liberty: awesome, who doesn’t like liberty? ‘Moms for Liberty.’ As the mom of two young kids, that even sounds good to me,” Psaki said. “But it’s vague enough, that even some of its own members are pretty unclear as to what the group is really all about, what they’re a part of.”

“Well, I’m here to help,” she continued. “Because as benign as Moms for Liberty may sound, its agenda is unmistakably extreme.”

[…]

She also noted early in the segment that the group recently hosted five Republican presidential candidates, including Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, at its annual summit in Philadelphia.

“So, below the surface of their friendly-sounding name, and politically vague taglines,” Psaki concluded, “they’re an unapologetically extreme organization that has built a long record of harassment and controversy, in a pretty short period of time.”

On the latest edition of her Sunday MSNBC show Inside With Jen Psaki, the host exposes the façade of right-wing extremist “parental rights” group Moms For Liberty bluntly well.

Moms For Liberty initially focused on opposing COVID mitigations, but sensing that well would dry up eventually, the group pivoted to anti-LGBTQ+ extremism, book banning, and wailing about the nonexistent dangers of “CRT” and SEL in schools.

I am having a very hard time finding a commonly agreed upon name for this style of jacket:

It’s a type of Mandarin jacket/shirt (named for the Mandarin collar) but there has got to be a general name for it. It was a working class long shirt from the end of the Qing dynasty. Some of them toggle down the front then have a flap and other fasten across the body on the side. Some have a lining and some don’t. Some have pockets and some don’t.

I cannot find a general name other than Mandarin jacket

Is it just Mandarin jacket? Am I losing my mind?

this is so nostalgic. tumblr rolls out something terrible. everyone complains. it breaks several people’s dashboards. for some reason it only rolls out to a few people at a time with seemingly no warning. the community collectively and immediately searches for a browser extension that undoes the change. i know we’ve all gotten burnt out on all social media sucking but this is genuinely The tumblr experience. everyone who hasn’t gotten it already gets an achievement. welcome to the club
